Old Kauai Montage

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

I know somebody the other day was looking for this old Kauai montage, here you go. I’ll get around to posting an organized video page with all the archives.

Kauai Montage #1

Here’s a little insight on this montage. The majority of this was filmed in Winter 2006 and Summer 2007. At this time Kauai’s skateboarding scene was at its peak in my opinion. Things got moving once Graceland skatepark was built, which was sort of Kauai’s first real park. The skate scene has always been really small or nonexistent. Everyone you see in the montage were good friends and were all really motivated to skate then. NickMo started to get good and would beat Gaelan and me often at S.K.A.T.E. Kainoa was in his prime too, as you can see he is clip mvp in this montage. This was before he blew out both his knees. The kickflip back tail he does at the end of the montage is probably my favorite thing I have ever filmed, even though it is a crappy trucking shot. If you look at ground on that clip you can see the cloud covering open up as Kainoa does the trick, it turned out amazing. No, I didn’t do that in post. CKMS is great, I always have a fun solo sesh on the ledges whenever I visit. AB finishes off the montage with a bang and NickMo’s reaction is priceless.
It’s kind of funny, it says “Kauai” in the title of the site but you won’t find any content from Kauai until now. Reason being the last several times I’ve gone back home I haven’t got any clips. The skate scene has become jaded since then, resulting in unproductive trips. A short flight to Oahu to skate with G.Lee always solves that.

Girl Skateboards Open House 2010

Monday, February 1st, 2010

Made the drive up to Girl Skateboard headquarters in Torrance for the 8th Annual Open House. I anticipated yet another 808er to place within the top three for the contest (Danny Hamaguchi 2nd place in 2007, Nathan Guest 2nd place in 2008, and Ryan Spencer 2nd place in 2009).

Sat back for a good six hours mooching off of free In-N-Out, spying on the Girl family superstars, and of course enjoying some good old fashion skateboarding. Doesn’t get any better!

Two particular kids that I was stoked on that made the cut to the finals were Trent McClung, an again Maui’s Ryan Spencer aka “Wall man”. Trent did a switch backside bigspin to flat first try and kickflip backlipped the San Marcos replica rail multiple times. Ryan added to the marks on the wall with his huge fs wallride transfer along with his other gap wallride to fakie. But his 50-50 up the San Marcos replica pretty much sealed the deal, it was obvious who won.

I don’t know how that termite keike weaseled his way into second place. Congratulations to Ryan Spencer for coming away with first place this time. Thanks to Girl Skateboards for opening their doors to host this rad contest.
Who’s going to keep this 808 tradition alive?
